5 Tips of Shoelaces

Shakespeare called this type of character the aglet, the baby-taming shrew. Prior to the invention of the button, its aglet was used as the end of a ribbon for fastening garments.

The hard plastic coating at the end of the shoelace is so called because it is called aglet. When you try to repeat the lacing of a shoe, the Aglet coating facilitates the braiding process and makes it easier for the shoe to go through its hole. Today, clear plastic aglets are assembled at the ends of shoelaces by special machines.

Aglets tend to come in plastic, so you can buy laces with different options for those who wish a variety of their aglets, but may be tired of broken aglets that reveal a frayed shoelace end. If you need a quick fix, wrap some tape around the end of the shoe to create an aglet. Then you can attach a metal aglet to the ends of the shoelaces and voila - your aglet will never break and facilite braiding.

There are several products that can be used to replace the plastic tip of the aglet at the end of the shoelace but my personal favorite is a heat shrink tubing. The aglet is not very durable, so you need to repeat the process when you walk in the rain. The cheapest and fastest aglet style can be used as a temporary solution until a more durable aglet is found.

You can find tubes that fit most standard-size laces, and if you need different colors, you can find them online. When I need to replace a clear tip, I use heat shrink tubing instead of a transparent aglet, and the lace tip still looks good.

The best way to determine the length of the shoelace you need is to look at your current shoelaces and the broken shoelaces you want to replace. The length of the broken tip should be kept in mind and added or subtracted if the old tip is too long or too short. Old armpits can be difficult to remove because they are attached to shoelaces with fibres.

To lace up, start with the lower part of the laces, which is folded in two halves, and insert the two ends into the last two eyelets (picture below). This results in a simple straight set of laces with only one cross tip.

A distinctive lacing style used in military boots consists of a lace fabric that, with three pairs of eyelets, forms a secure ladder-like design on the shoe. Properly dressed, it is effective for hiking and skating skates, where the tip must be held together for a certain time.

Start by pulling the end of the tip through the first pair of eyelets, making sure both sides are about half the length. Pull the end down and let it run parallel to the string, step two, to the left eyelet of the pair of six.

Take the right tip and pull it diagonally down in the left direction, crossing the pre-threaded left tip, this time alternating the fabric of the tip and inserting it into the left loop of pair four. Repeat step two and run the tip through the next loop and thread it in pair one over the top of the right loop.

No matter how hard you try with the little plastic laces at the end of the shoelaces (the official term is armpit crunching), you will still find yourself with a row of frayed laces. Clean the ends of the laces to remove frayed threads, torn pieces and the like. You can use the classic trick of burning the ends with a skewer to grab the fibers, but this is a temporary solution and you will end up back where you started.

You will want to dip the laces in wax and roll them up to completely cover them. A colored candle will work, but it will have a different color than your shoelaces, and it will change the color of the ends.

Ideal for shoes with small eyelets or thick laces. It is easier compared to the aforementioned ladder tip style, but can be a bit more loose than other lace styles. Cross Lace Styles are a fun and creative way to tie your shoes.

Many pairs of shoes rely on complementary and contrasting laces and design elements for which no replacement can be found. There are shoe companies that make their own shoelaces, or they make aglets.

In contrast to the clear tubing, red heat-shrinkable tubing can be used for aglets, which are identical to the original, but more flexible. Heat shrink tubing contracts inside about half (or less) its diameter and does not contract during cutting into short sections of the same length as the Aglet you need (15-20mm or 1 / 2-3 / 4 inch).

You can also shorten the length of the shoelace if you find that the clear shrinkable tubular aglet is close enough to the original aglet to cut off one end of the shoelace. In this case tie the shoe so that one end has the desired length and the excess at the other end is cut to the desired length.

The following example shows a shoelace that is 7 x 3.2 inches wide, which is larger than the 3 x 1.6 inches wide shoelaces, but smaller than the 1 / 4 inch wide shoelaces.

In order to replace or repair your shoelaces, you need a new aglet (shoelaces), the material from which the shoelaces are repaired. There are several ways to make the tips look new, or at least work better. There are several solutions you can try, but none of them will make the lace look perfect.

Tie them. Aha, Jk kid. Take 'em out and put 'em in a washing machine with bleach1. What is a good "green" alternative to yarn, stitching, lacing, shoelaces, etc.?You can make threads, yarns etc out of certain plants like cotton or flax or even animal hair.(horse hair when woven/braided makes strong and beautiful laces, hat bands , belts etc, and you can get that right from a living animal and it will not hurt him.) also animal hides that have been tanned make very strong laces and stitching materials. From plants you can also make the dyes to color these items..simply by boiling some of them.. All of these are green examples..the native americans lived very green,,, using only what they needed. they used only what animals they needed for food and clothing and let the rest live to reproduce. . when they collected plants for food, clothing, medicines, and dyes,.they saved and planted the seeds..to renew their supplies. Everything they used or made was eco-friendly , renewable and did not pollute the earth . The above examples are just a few but beware . . to make and do most of these is very time consuming ,, that is why man invented the ungreen factories.. to cut down on production time and make more money,,,happy stitching... perhaps you can let us know what green alternatives you found and show what you made with them. .HAPPY STITCHING.2. If we take all the shoelaces ever made and tie them together will their length be enough to reach Mars?I guess the first question to ask is when did you want to try this? The distance between the Earth and Mars varies greatly depending upon where the two planets are in their orbits. If they are aligned with both on the same side of the sun, the distance is about 60 million km. When aligned on opposite sides of the sun, the distance is around 400 million km. Since, right now, we happen to be our closest to Mars, let's go with the 60 million km distance and see what happens... (and let's pretend that we can tie them together without any loss in the length -- so two one-meter laces tied together makes a two-meter length)A typical athletic shoe lace is about one meter long. Some boot laces are much longer; some dress shoe laces are shorter -- but let's just consider one meter long laces. In the history of making these laces, is it reasonable to expect that 60,000 million have been made? That is, after all, only 30,000 million pairs of shoes. Do you think we've made 30 billion pairs of shoes?Suppose we broaden our definition of "shoe lace" to include all of the various laces and narrow straps, ribbons, sinew, etc that have been used to hold footwear in place throughout history?I am leaning towards a yes answer here, but only since we are at our closest to Mars. But do it quick -- Mars is moving further away every day!If we take all the shoelaces ever made and tie them together will their length be enough to reach Mars?If we take all the shoelaces ever made and tie them together will thier length be enough to reach Mars?.

Its called junk because they keep falling off. They should have stuck with the original metal aglets1. How can I braid my own shoelaces? The name and way of making The English word shoelace is a bit old fashioned, from the time strips of leather were used, which are still called lace in the knotting world. Most shoelaces are braided these days. The American shoestring is more appropriate, as long as you take braided string.Modern shoelaces are braided, in the round, around a core for the round ones and without a core for the flat ones.Braiding by hand Here (my own site, not commercial) you find instructions how to braid with 8 strands, in the round. This is not the only site online with those instructions. If you want different ones, (or if the site is down) you can google for instructions. As a beginner braider you will likely not be able to braid that many strands out of the hand, even as an experienced braider I have to work up to it. If you want to work up to it, here you find several easier braids with which to work up to it.Machines do not use just 8 strands, 16 strands are more likely, often 16 groups of two or more strands.Using tools If you want to braid 'proper' shoe laces by hand, you may want to look into working on a disk. The disks are available under the name of Kumihimo disks. 'Proper' Kumihimo is done on a wooden frame in the shape of a stool. This wikipedia page has a good photo of a traditional set-up as well as a good basic description of what the different items are.And even with kumihimo disks or frames you will have to work up to a braid as intricate as shoelaces. Braiding on a kumihimo frame by a young boy. Photos cropped to protect anonimity. Photos by Willeke, free to use for all.Making it fat and round Whatever way you shape the braid, for the fat round laces you will also have to learn to braid around a core. This is a string of the right diameter or, more often used in commercial braids, a bunch of thin string that are kept together at the top of the braid and often suspended above or below for you to braid around. In the photos there would be a set of strands suspended above the frame and allowed to drop into the braid at the same speed as braiding. With a braiding disk you would hold the strands and move them around as you are braiding. And with hand-held braids you would tie the core with the outer layer to your fixed point and braid around them. In the first link I give the core is mentioned in the instructions and is part of the pictures.Weaving Braiding with this many strands is closely related to weaving, the resulting string is a weave, but in the round with the strands on the diagonal. If you would twist a series of strands around a tube, spiralling one way, you would be able to weave the other spiral in, by going over one, under one, all the way. It will be hard to get it tight and neath and you would likely have to tighten the weave later. The core would go through or instead of the tube. Having done the kind of work, I have to say that learning to braid is much easier.Aglets, the hard bits at the ends For are al' shoelaces you also need to add aglets, I direct you to the site of Ian Fieggen to find out how to make them.Would I do it I would not make my own shoelaces, even though I have the knowledge and skills. Laces in the shops are relatively cheap, durable and available in many different variations and designs. Making your own is going to be a lot of work, likely to result in lower quality and lower durability. In fact, it is the other way around, I use commercially made shoelaces to train myself in braiding, they are very handy for that. Come in many nice colours and have aglets, the hard bits at the end that protect the ends and aid in feeding through strands to test the weaves. How do I know I am a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, whom do include braiding as part of our field of interest. My personal interest in braiding goes back at least 40 years, likely longer. There is also an international organization for braiders, the Braid Society I am not a member but I do know several people who are.PS, while I do not make my own shoe laces, I know people who make their own out of commercial string, see my answer on The Great Outdoors.2. You know those little ends on shoelaces - the hard part that holds your shoelace together? It's called an aglet: An aglet or aiglet is the little plastic or metal cladding on the end of shoelaces (or any type of lace, though shoelaces are the most commonly referenced) that keeps the twine from unraveling. The word "aglet" (or "aiglet") comes from Old French "aguillette" (or "aiguillette"), which is the diminutive of "aguille" (or "aiguilee"), meaning "needle". This in turn comes from the original Latin word for needle: "acus". In times past, aglets were usually made of metal though some were glass or stone. Many were highly ornamental, and made of precious metals such as silver. Before the invention of buttons, they were used on the ends of ribbons to fasten clothing together. Sometimes they would be formed into small figures. Shakespeare calls this type of figure an "aglet baby" in The Taming of the Shrew. Purely decorative metal ornaments called aiguillette are sometimes features of modern military dress uniforms. In modern times an aglet is frequently used as an example of a common object whose name is relatively unknown. Perhaps due to this, they are occasionally referenced in popular culture. According to the paranoid superhero The Question in Justice League Unlimited, their true purpose is sinister. According to characters from Achewood, aglets are a key ingredient in a drug called "Fool's Meth." The aglet is also mentioned in the 1988 movie, Cocktail where Tom Cruise's character called it a "flugelbinder". Also there was great mention of it in the move "Repossesed" starring Linda Blair and Leslie Neilson.3. ever used shoelaces or strings to tie a ponytail ?I've used ribbons and scarves in the past, but I found that for me it did not work unless I had an elastic underneath it

Well since his brain is in his penis (like every other male ) He should probably go to a urologist Edit Ever wonder why one of the side effects of viagra is headaches?1. has somebody ever tied your shoelaces together?No...but I have experienced my shoelace was tied at my other classmate's shoelace!2. Temporary way to remedy untied shoelacesThe best solution against walking with undone laces is to tie your laces in such a way that they will not come undone. And while it might seem unneeded, untie and re do the knots when you take your shoes off or even when you are in the house between going out. Freshly tied shoes fit better and the laces are less likely to come undone.Tie a surgeons shoelace knot, as shown here on the site of Ian Fiegen. If your knots end up the wrong way around, see lower down, the Granny knot bit. You can also tie one of the other knots of the site which have the extra bit of knotting in the middle of the knot, (and not an extra knot made out of the loops,) like the Berluti, the Better Bow knot, the Ian's secure knot or the Turquoise Turtle Shoelace knot. All these knots are based on winding the one loops twice (or more) around the other. It is not unlikely that your problem comes from tying Granny knots, where you start the knot from the same site for both the first half and the second half. This results in the loops pointing at your ankle and toe rather than at your other foot and out on the other site. It is rather hard to just change the way you tie the second half of the knot. Part of changing it is tying a different version of the second half of the knot. But it is easier to relearn the first half of the knot the other way around. If you do not want to do a Surgeon style knot (which is very reliable) you may want to try out the Ian Fast shoelace knot, which is not only fast but also so much a different way of tying that you are likely able to get out of the granny knot fall.On the same site you can also find ways to feed your laces in so you do not have to tie knots (but the shoes will not sit tight.)I am not connected with Ian Fieggen or his site. It is just the best site about knots and laces for shoes.3. How do you clean shoelaces?Soak them in Woolite, then rinse4. How do I get my cat to stop chewing on my shoelaces?TRY SOME OF THE "NO CHEW" OR "STOP CHEW" SPRAY THAT YOU CAN PURCHASE AT ANY DEPARTMENT OR PET STORE. THIS SHOULD DO THE JOB. How to Clean White ShoelacesNothing can detract from the appearance of your shoes quite like dingy, dirty laces. Your laces may drag on the ground, getting grungier than the rest of the shoe, and the porous fabric of white laces makes them show dirt more quickly. Fortunately, you can clean your white laces in the washing machine or by hand and have them looking bright and fresh again. If you have a washing machine handy and your white laces are made of cotton or another washable material, you can take a lot of the extra work out of cleaning them. You can even throw the laces in with a load of other wash to make the process part of your regular laundry routine. How to Wash Tennis Shoes by Hand and in the Washing Machine If you do not have a full load of laundry to do or want to have a bit more control over the washing of the laces, you can also wash them by hand. This is a little more labor intensive, but it's still a good way to get them clean and bright. If the laces are especially dirty or stained yellow, a simple stain treatment and a weak bleach solution may not suffice to get them looking new again. Instead, you will need to give them a good soak in stronger bleach water, which Clorox reports is safe for this purpose. No matter how you choose to clean them, white laces respond well to bleach and soaking. Soon, your laces will look brand new, and they wo not detract from the appearance of your shoes.6. What are these sticky thing that are found on shoelaces.?You've encountered a plant called burdock. This is a daisy family that related to Cornflowers, Thistles (the spiky things that look like cacti with similar flowers shape). The plant is that weed with the huge giant, hairy, light green leaves and tall loose clusters of dark purple flowers. When fall comes the burrs come! They are adapted to cling to the fur if animals, hitch a ride and drop off miles away to grow somewhere else. The plant as well as thistles are prickly harmless annoyances and not poisonous.7. What makes shoelaces so special?Aglets, shoelaces being easy to find and in the right lengths, the smooth exterior and if you have the right kind, the ease of tying and staying in their knots. As a hobby knot tyer, (and member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers) I use mountain boot laces to try out the knots I am working with, rather than paracord. On the other hand, I know enough people who make their own laces out of cord of the right size and with a smooth enough surface for the shoes they are used in. Reasons to make their own: Longer lasting laces. Needing non standard lengths. Needing non standard diameter laces. Needing two different lengths due to having an insole or two very different feet. Wanting a colour or design which is not available in their (local) shops. As long as the ends are finished in a way that works, they are happy with their laces, often so happy that they never go back to shop bought ones. While I do agree with using other readily available string and might do it one time, I do not think braiding your own is useful. See my answer here on Arts and Crafts Stack Exchange. One 'knot' that is very useful for making (temporary) shoe laces out of other string is the whipping to finish the ends. Here the Common Whipping on the animated knots site (others are available.)(The site I linked to in the first word of this answer is that of Ian Fieggen, who has a great site about shoe laces, their knots and whatever else you may need to know about them.)
